Welcome to my portfolio for the class of Writing 39B. What is Writing 39B? This class is an undergraduate ten-week course offered here at the University of California, Irvine. The course helps satisfy the lower division writing portion of the general education requirements, which falls under category 1. Writing 39B is part of a yearlong writing series that follows a unique theme each quarter. For the Winter quarter of 2020, our theme is the gift of shared grief. The course primarily focuses on content relating to the rhetorics of mourning. The goal for this diligent course is to help students develop rhetorical strategies to interpret a variety of texts that relate to our theme of grief and mourning.
Course Objectives: Throughout the ten-week timeframe, we are going to be exposed to a multitude of rhetorical strategies, such as metacognitive reading skills. These tools are going to allow us to gain a better understanding of a text and help us analyze more efficiently. The devices also help engage us to improve all the “habits of the mind.” The workload is going to be overwhelming, but the improvements in our reading and writing are going to be worthwhile.

About me
My Background
Hello everyone! My name is Johana Penaloza, and I am a first-year student at the University of California, Irvine. I am currently a Pharmaceutical Science major, but I’m planning to switch out to Journalism so I can pursue my love for writing. Writing has always allowed me to be a voice for the voiceless. As a person who suffers from anxiety, writing is a way to help me express myself and gain the confidence to state my mind publicly. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California, in a Hispanic household. I am the youngest of all my siblings, and photography and fashion are my two favorite things in the world!
