The Power of Dialogue

Memoir Essays scrap together life experiences in which revolve around a central message by reflecting on a time of growth and transition. Writing memoir essays can be a hard pill to swallow, especially if one is writing about a time when they endured sharp pain that makes them want to turn off their humanity. However, there is something remotely good that can come out from this heart stabbing pain, an intended message that can help others heal by creating a storyline in which others can find relatable. In a memoir essay, the rhetor must portray their message without going off-rails when writing the piece. A memoir essay differs from a “memoir” due to the length; therefore, the writer must remain focused on conveying the centralized message while incorporating rhetorical strategies, such as; dialogue and imagery, to help establish scenery for a better understanding of the overall theme. On Thursday of week eight, we all participated in a dialogue and scene exercise in class, which was fascinating yet informative. The activity allowed us to let our creativity flow. After sharing our response to the practices in class, we got feedback, which helped me understand the importance of dialogue when writing. Dialogue is a communication tool that has significant value in storytelling due to the allowance of demonstrating a character's personality, emotions, and actions. The use of dialogue adds more details that permit the audience to gain a better understanding of the tone, setting, feelings, and intended message. This in-class activity helped me understand the importance of rhetorical strategies when writing a memoir essay. The use of dialogue is highlighted in the course objectives, and successfully incorporating this rhetorical tool will benefit me by helping me grow as a writer. Overall, the response to the dialogue and scene exercise that I wrote in the class created a wholesome environment of pure laughter. I felt like my partner, and I did an excellent job of using dialogue to create a personality for the characters in which helps spiral emotions.

Task #1

“I want ice cream,” she yelled to me.

“Yes I do too,” I responded

She then suggested, “Then we should go get some.”

“Let’s do that,” I nodded my head.

Task #2

“Hello, welcome to Olive Garden, may I take your order?” the waitress said while looking down at her notepad.

“What’s up, Kelly, how have you been?” shouted Robert.

“Oh gosh, it’s YOU,” said Kelly in disgust.

“Yeah, it’s me. I’m just here having dinner with my girlfriend,” explained Robert.

“Hi… it’s so nice to meet you,” said Kelly sarcastically.

“We would just have salads and water,” demanded Robert.

“Sure, coming right up!” responded Kelly.

Kelly goes to get the couple’s order and returns to their table.

“Opppps,” stuttered Kelly while dropping their order on the couple.
