On January 15, 2020, we were assigned to read and annotate Kerry Dirk's academic article "Navigating Genres.” Kerry Dirk introduces us to a variety of genres and their rhetorical usages. We all had to annotate Dirk’s article using metacognition reading tools. After defining genres through the use of metacognition reading tools, I learned about the different uses of genres and the awareness that it requires. In order to completely understand genres, we are required to look at writings in a “rhetorical” way. Metacognition reading tools are rhetorical strategies that are used to certify that certain objectives have been attained. Metacognitive strategies are applied to help us gain the ability to analyze our learning process. These tools help us plan, analyze, and solve or correct problems that we may come across in our life. Kerry Dirk’s academic article, “Navigating Genres” helped me expand my knowledge towards the different usage in the variety of genres. The article also helped me practice the use of metacognitive reading tools, and how to apply these strategies to various reading situations that will allow me to read texts more accurately. The strategies were designed to establish to immerse metacognition reading tools into an already existing content related assessment. Learning the concepts of metacognition reading tools helped me improve my progress towards satisfying the course objectives. Successfully learning the concepts of metacognition strategies has helped me be a part of an academic discourse community. It has helped me because I learned about the diverse usage of genres through metacognition strategies which allowed me to practice intercommunication among other individuals. The mastery of metacognition reading tools is important to academic ethos by allowing the audience to understand the thoughts and emotions that are being conveyed. Metacognition reading tools are a significant part of achieving the understanding of rhetorical writings.
